I really enjoyed writing that pitch e-mail.
I don’t know if it’s because i’m so passionate about my client that getting to brag about them in an e-mail to a reporter was really exciting or maybe i’m just a little sleep deprived (also likely), but either way, I found the whole process to be quite exciting.
I think features are my favorite news stories to read, and since I worked for the OU Daily once upon a time, I tried to use my minimal journalistic knowledge to craft an enticing e-mail. I tried to visualize the feature reporter, Anne, at The Samford Crimson, reading my e-mail. What would grab her attention? What would pique her curiosity enough to make her take the pitch to her editor and say, “I want to write this.”
I kept this in mind, in addition to some tips I found in this article on Writer’s Digest, as I crafted my e-mail, and I must say, I’m really proud of how it turned out. If I were a feature reporter at Samford’s University newspaper, I would definitely scoop this up. (but then again, I may be biased 🙂 ).
I can feel my brand and my client really starting to come together, and I’m getting more and more excited for client launch week. I’m dying to show the producer what I’ve been working on, but i’ll refrain, so that when client launch week gets here, I can surprise her with everything at once!
